OPPD's Fort Calhoun Station, a 484 MW nuclear power plant, is located on the west bank of the Missouri River about 19 miles north of Omaha. Planning for the facility, which began commercial production of electricity in 1973, commenced in 1966, based on studies showing a nuclear plant would be a safe, reliable and environmentally clean means of producing electricity. Experience to date support those early findings. Safety remains the number one priority in operating the plant today.
