Program

The electric car program is offered as an elective class at Kennedy. This year we have 22 students enrolled in the program, the majority being 9th an 10th graders. Juniors and Seniors are being encouraged to take a full load in core courses and we are finding it difficult to attract students that meet the requirements to drive the cars.

So far this year we have been working on three cars, two of which are about three years old and one new car.

We have a graphics lab where we are make graphics for the cars and for advertisement. We are also making T” shirts to raise money.

New S 40 Car

To date

The new S class car which will be S40.The car was started during the spring and summer and is coming along nicely but with some challenges. The other two cars for this year will be E class cars.

This year the person interested in designing the car did so using wind tunnel results and the car was designed from the outside in. The fiberglass body was completed first and the chassis second. As of this date the body is being filled, primed, and sanded. The chassis is nearly complete.

Problems and Solutions

The challenges are mainly getting the driver and batteries in with the required clearance under the roll bar. Many ideas have been considered over the last 3 weeks and finally a solution seems to be near.

The challenge of balance and location of weight has yet to be considered.

The promotional team has made initial contact with sponsors and follow-up conversations will take place in February.

Plans for February

During February the plan is:

  1.  Have the new 40 car rolling and painted for a February show
  2.  Have the other two cars ready for paint.
  3.  Make contact with sponsors to determine funding

Other Goals

The team is also communicating with the other ten teams in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin to determine what the organization in Iowa will look like since UNI has opted to not support Electrathon
