Air leaking into and out of your home, whether it’s old or new, could be driving up your energy costs. Air leaks also can create air quality issues that can lead to health problems for your family.
An OPPD home energy audit can help you determine where your home is losing conditioned air. For a fee, OPPD will send a certified energy rater to your home to conduct a computerized blower door test and also use an infrared imaging camera to help show where and how air is escaping through walls.
For the blower door test, all of the home’s windows and exterior doors are closed. A fan is then installed in the front door with a special airtight seal. With the fan running, the energy rater monitors the flow of air through the fan as well as the air pressure in the home.
Once the home is sealed and depressurized, the rater can detect exactly where air is leaking into or out of the home. The infrared imaging camera will help the customer visually see the temperature difference where there is air leakage.
In addition to the air leakage test and infrared imaging, the rater will perform a visual inspection of accessible areas in your attic, basement and crawl spaces and recommend how best to seal and/or insulate these areas.
After the audit, the customer receives a full report evaluating what measures they can take to seal the home, improving efficiency and comfort. In addition, the customer receives an energy management kit, which includes a publication on insulating and weatherizing, a CFL bulb and home weather-stripping products.
