February 2006 Issue

New Practice on Meter Sockets and Residential Slip-Joint Risers

Effective March 1, 2006, OPPD will no longer supply meter sockets for residential or commercial construction projects (permanent or temporary service), or slip-joint risers for residential projects. For some time OPPD has been one of the few utilities who were still providing meter sockets and risers for customer projects, but OPPD now finds it necessary to discontinue this practice.

Meter sockets will now need to be obtained from electrical supply centers similar to other electrical materials and supplies needed for projects. Local vendors will have information on sockets approved for use on OPPD's system.

OPPD has been in contact with local inspecting authorities and supply houses and has briefed them on these changes. Updated meter specifications for these sockets will be issued shortly.

Residential Installation of The Slip-Joint Riser Attached Meter Socket

OPPD has provided the slip-joint riser which attached to residential meter sockets. These will no longer be provided by OPPD, but the slip-joint riser still will continue to be specified and required for residential construction similar to the current practice. The risers will need to be obtained from local electrical supply houses. These risers need to be installed on the home and attached to the meter socket before permanent electrical service can be provided to the home

Situations Where OPPD Will Continue to Provide Meter Sockets

  • Current Transformer (CT) Metering Installations
  • OPPD will still continue to provide meter sockets for projects where CT metering is required. Customers will continue to get CTs and sockets from OPPD. This is due to the fact that OPPD wires the CTs and PTs and feels the need to maintain a tighter level of standardization for the meter sockets on these types of installations.
  • Farm Meter Assemblies
  • Meter assemblies and meter sockets for farms will continue to be provided by OPPD the same as always.

Please refer questions you have on these items to OPPD Meter Department at 552-5936 or 552-5941
