Clearwater High School

Monthly Reports

January
The Clearwater Power Drive squad this year is led by the two Seniors Adam Schlecht and Derek Thiele and they are aided by the two juniors Derek Damme and Alex Hoffman.  The team is making changes to the two cars from last year and are divided into teams.  On car A 58 this is what has been completed on the car so far up to this point.

When school started we went hard to work and made repairs to run the cars at the Wayne Fall Rally.  When we got back from the rally we went right to work.  First we stripped them down.  The next step was to talk about the changes that were to be made.  We spent a great amount of time and thought to think and decide what changes to make.  Once we decided on the changes we went to work fixing them.  The first thing that we did was we tore out the brake pedal and fixed it up and redid the way that the switch was wired.  We also tore out the throttle and redid the throttle pedal.   One of our changes was to make a fiberglass undercarriage so we had to make a foam model of the bottom of the car and sand it.  We are now in the process of taking that foam and fiber glassing over it to get the shape of the car.  Also we are working on making a frame for our lexan canopy.

Car A38 is making the same changes as car A58 only we cut the front of the roll cage so we could raise the roll cage up so our knees are not above the roll cage.

February
Theses are some of the things the Clearwater Power Drive Team for the month of February 2008. The members of the power drive squad are Adam Schlecht, Derek Thiele, Alex Hoffman, and Derek Damme.  We have been working hard on our cars during the month of February we have accomplished many thing.

Just to name a few things we did on the car A-38 and A-58 we fiberglass a shell for the bottom of the cars so they would be more aerodynamic.  We also started on are nose cone.  We cut and glued styrofoam together.  This year we tried a new style of mounting the nose cone to the car.  First we cut a block of wood and drilled holes in so we could slide bolts though.  Next we routered the center out big enough to fit the block of wool would snuggly fit in the styrofoam.  Then we glued the styrofoam together and put the piece with the board in it second from the car. Next we wielded a piece of flat iron the front of the car with two holes drilled in it so the bolts could slide though.  The Last step we took was to attach the nose cone to the car which we did with some nut and lock washers.

March
During the month of March the Clearwater Power Drive team has been racing against the clock to get our cars finished for the rallies.  In order to accomplish this we had to finish the nose cones, install a kill switch on the inside of the cars, tin the cars with aluminum, and we started on our lexan cover frames.

Car A-38
Our car has been at a delay after we had found out that the nose cone was not lining up as we had planned so we had to go back and do it all over again. But after that delay we are now having to race against the time clock on getting the cars ready for the racing season to begin. We have also fought to get the roll cage finished so we could now begin putting on the tin. The roll cage was one of our major changes that we had to make.   Also we are working on getting the kill switch installed in the inside of the cockpit of the car.  We also are getting the fiber glass attached to thebottom of the car.

Car A-58
Car A-58 focused our time towards the nose cone and the tinning of the car.  We got our nose cone completed by bondoing and sanding our cars nose cone, we got our nose cone done, and we started to tin our car but are not quite done.  We also got a bracket made out of flat metal to hold the kill switch. We then rounded the flat metal so it would not have any sharp edges. When we put our tin on we will also put on our fiber glass.
