January - Car A39
This year we have decided to make a few changed to the 39 car. We removed its bodywork are currently replacing it. Other changes that we are working on are converting the brakes from foot to hand. In doing this we discovered that we could not apply enough pressure to the brakes with the handle alone. After some brainstorming we came up with the idea to use the hand brake cable to pull on a lever, and then have the lever pull on the wheel brake cable. This gave us the necessary power to lock up the brakes. We are also reworking the electrical system on the car trying to remove any extra material we do not need.
February - Car A39
We have continued to work on the body getting everything close to gluing on. Constructing the rear removable panels has been a little tricky and we are learning how to install dzus screws. Due to poor weather and district basketball work wasn’t as progressive as it could have been in February.
March - Car A39
This month we have been working hard on the body work getting the car ready for paint. We have been working hard on the new corrections to the car and are excited for the first race. As long as our lat minute parts come in on time we will be race ready.
April - Car A39
April has been busy finalizing the car and testing it. We had a successful first race at Hastings receiving first place. Since then we have had minor mechanical problems or accidents preventing us from finishing. We are double checking everything in preparation for the state race.
January - Car S22
This year we have added another car to the Wayne High garage. After many brainstorming sessions we agreed on a totally new design. We have stayed with a similar design for a few years, and thought it was time for something new. We have welded the frame and roll cage, built the steering system, and have functional brakes at this point. We are currently working on the body, and electrical, hoping to be able to test by the end of February if the weather cooperates.
Along with working on the two cars we are also working on a new “crash cart”. We are making a cart/wagon that will have all of our supplies located in one area, hopefully reducing time wasted looking for tools and materials.
February - Car S22
We have finished cutting out all of the body panels and are ready to glue them on. We would like to take the car out for a test before we put on the body to check for any stress points, and take care of them. Unfortunately the weather has not been our friend up here in Wayne and our parking lot still has ice on it. If things go well we will have a test session on Saturday March 1st. We are wired, pinned, lubed and geared, just waiting for the sun.
Our crash cart is taking some time as well to complete but should be ready to go by the first race.
March - Car S22
This month we have been working hard on the body work getting the car ready for paint. The car came back from painting a week before the first race, and we will be pushing to complete it for Hastings. We did test the new car before painting and everything seemed to work well. We will see if Murphy’s law will kick into effect in Hastings.
April - Car S22
Our new car has been a learning process through April. We are learning about what it can and more importantly what it cannot do. Our first race at Hastings was successful with a third place finish, but we have not been able to run the whole 60 minutes of the race so far this year. We have been testing and hopefully have the bugs worked out for state.
