In an effort to keep power costs low and avoid building new power plants, OPPD has created a curtailable energy source that can produce as much power as an OPPD generating unit. The goal is to sign up customers with a total of 500-megawatts of curtailable energy either through OPPD's standby generation program or through curtailment rates and riders. In the standby generation program, customers with 500 kilowatts of capacity receive $1.50 per kW per month based on contracted generator output.

Here are a few successful examples of the program:
- The University of Nebraska Medical Center curtails 3,500 kw for an annual energy credit of $84,000.
- Offutt Air Force Base curtails 5,000 kw for an annual energy credit of $120,000.
In addition, OPPD credits the customer 15 cents per kilowatt-hour for generation produced on OPPD's request. In order to monitor the on-site energy produced, the customer pays for OPPD-installed energy-monitoring equipment. To be eligible for the program, customers must be on one of OPPD's standard electric rate schedules, and must periodically test their generators to ensure they are in good operating condition.
Through the Rate 260 and 467 rider programs, OPPD offers energy credit to customers who lower their energy use during peak load situations on OPPD's request.
