OPPD Receives Another Honor for Quality Tree Care

OPPD has been named a Tree Line USA Utility in recognition of its quality tree care programs and services.

It's the 13th consecutive year OPPD has been designated a Tree Line USA Utility, a program sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters. OPPD has received more designations than any other Nebraska utility.

Additionally, the Nebraska Forest Service and Nebraska Community Forestry Council have given OPPD the Utility Award. The award recognizes OPPD's public outreach and cited a TV commercial, web video and speakers bureau.

"Across America, people are recognizing and celebrating how vital trees are to our cities and towns," said John Rosenow, Chief Executive of the Arbor Day Foundation, a nonprofit education organization dedicated to tree planting and environmental stewardship.

“Trees are an important part of urban landscapes all across the United States from an environmental and economic standpoint. Trees not only help clean the air and water sources, the shade they provide helps reduce peak energy usage and conserve energy. Utility providers like the Omaha Public Power District are setting a good example about the importance of recognizing a valuable community resource like trees.”

In announcing OPPD’s selection, the Arbor Day Foundation said the District met the basic requirements for a Tree Line USA utility. The requirements are that the utility follows industry standards for quality tree care; provides annual worker training in best tree-care practices; participates in and sponsors a tree-planting and public education program; has a tree-based energy conservation program; and participates in an Arbor Day celebration.

“We are very pleased to be named as a Tree Line USA Utility for another year,” said John Buckley, supervisor of Transmission and Distribution Maintenance Management for OPPD.”It reflects this utility’s commitment to being a good steward of our environment. We believe in the importance of quality tree care while meeting our service objectives as well as the proper selection, placement and maintenance of trees, especially around overhead power lines.”
