Renewable Goal
OPPD has set a goal of having 10 percent of its total generation - approximately 400 megawatts - coming from renewable energy by 2020. Most of that the total will be produced by wind resources.

Wind Energy
In 2009, OPPD finalized an agreement with the Nebraska Public Power District and started taking delivery of 25 MW of wind energy from NPPD's Elkhorn Ridge wind farm in Bloomfield, Neb. OPPD also buys 10 MW from NPPD's Ainsworth wind farm.
OPPD has signed a power purchase agreement with Flat Water Wind Farm LLC to buy the total 60-MW output of the company's wind energy facility in Richardson County. Neb., to be completed by the end of 2010.
In an agreement with TPW Petersburg LLC, OPPD has committed to buying up to 40 MW of electricity produced at the firm's wind farm to be built in Boone County, Neb. The facility is expected to be in service in 2011.
In addition, OPPD operates a wind turbine built in partnership with Valmont Industries. The wind turbine generates a maximum of 660 kilowatts, or enough electricity to power about 150 homes.
Landfill Gas Plant
OPPD owns a facility at the Douglas County landfill that generates power from the gases that occur naturally through decomposition. The facility is operated by Waste Management Inc., which runs dozens of similar gas power plants across the United States.
After years of success as one of the state's largest sources of renewable energy, the facility was expanded to its current net output of 6.1 MW.
