Energy-Saving Trees Program
Each year OPPD, in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, gives away free trees to its customer-owners on a first-come, first-served basis.
To reserve a tree, customers use a web tool to determine the best place to plant with energy savings and safety in mind. Strategic tree-planting can provide a windbreak in the winter and shade in the summer, cutting energy use by up to 30 percent.
The 2016 program is complete. This year, OPPD gave away more than 2,000 free trees. Please check back next spring for more information.
Call before you dig. Before you start planting, call to have your underground utility lines located. In Nebraska: 1-800-331-5666; Iowa: 1-800-292-8989. This free service typically takes place within 48 to 72 hours after you call.
Look up for overhead power lines, as your tree will grow in height and width. Tree interference with overhead utility lines could result in interruption in your electric service and possible removal of the tree.
If you received a tree through this program and have questions, please call the Arbor Day Foundation at 1-855-503-7180 or visit arborday.org/treecare.
