Symphony Workforce Challenge

Symphony Workforce Challenge

Challenge Overview

OPPD is sponsoring and participating in a pilot with Symphony Workforce Development Corporation. Symphony Workforce specializes in empowering students by providing access to some of the region’s most dynamic companies and startups, and incentivizing young people to look inward to discover a career path that aligns with who they are at their core.

Find the Why! is Symphony Workforce's gamified mobile platform that allows students and young people (ages 12-25) to compete in 7-day challenges to solve real-world problems put forward by businesses and organizations. Aside from crucial self-discovery, students compete for cash prizes, virtual internships and thousands in scholarship dollars.

OPPD's Challenge Dates: November 9-15, 2022

Middle school, high school, and college students across the country are invited to participate in an energy challenge. As a leader in Nebraska energy production, we're asking students to use innovation to solve “right now” problems. During this one-week challenge, participants will solve the two challenges listed below.

The top three teams will be awarded cash prizes.

the Challenge

Design a solution or campaign that helps improve adoption of clean energy practices in your community.

Context: The world is changing with record temperatures, droughts, wildfires and flooding. OPPD wants to do our part in reducing the impact we cause the world in our efforts to power it.

Power with Purpose is OPPD’s solar + natural gas project that moves us toward that goal and supports OPPD's unwavering mission to provide affordable, reliable and environmentally sensitive energy services to customers. OPPD is siting and developing up to 600 megawatts of utility-scale solar generation, and up to 600 megawatts of backup natural gas. The project will be one of the largest renewable energy investments of its kind in the Midwest. Power with Purpose allows us to retire our oldest North Omaha Station (NOS) natural gas fired units and refuel the remaining units from coal to natural gas, allowing OPPD to integrate more renewable, clean energy into our system. For more information click here.

Roadmap Company Questions:
  • What are some of the reasons for resistance to clean energy in your community? Discuss their validity.
  • Given the current news and media environment, how would you bring about change to a diverse community?
  • How important is it to keep electricity prices low and what role do clean energy resources play?
  • How could solar power help the farming industry?
  • Do you believe Solar + Natural gas is the right combination for OPPD or is there another energy combination you would pitch us? What & Why?
  • What sustainable generation technologies are most interesting to you?
  • What do you think the future energy generation mix will look like?
  • Create a +/-60 second video pitching your solution. Upload your video here:

This challenge is being coordinated by Symphony Workforce, as well as being promoted and executed in collaboration with OPPD.
