News Releases : OPPD offers new and improved process and resources for Customer-Owned Generation

More and more people are showing interest in generating their own electricity through solar panels, wind turbines, or other sources. Omaha Public Power District now has a new and improved process to help them get started.

We’ve implemented a streamlined online application system, as well as resources for those considering Customer-Owned Generation, at www.oppd.com/COG.

This new website contains information including a quick-start guide to help customers understand the process, as well as how net metering works with regards to billing. Customers will also find a calculator to determine their pay-off period for an investment in solar panels, and more.

All customer-owned generation systems must first be vetted by OPPD before interconnection with the electric grid. This is crucial in order to ensure the safety of our customers and our employees.

OPPD currently has 192 customers who generate their own solar energy and 22 customers who generate their own wind energy. These figures do not include diesel generators that are typically installed for hospitals and business complexes.

We hope the enhancements we’ve made and the additional resources we’re providing help customers exploring how they can reduce their carbon footprint, while saving on utility bills with customer-owned generation.
