Enhance Sustainability with Renewable Energy
![]()
At OPPD, we believe in the power of choice — your choice to make a positive impact on the environment. Offset your carbon footprint and embrace a sustainable future with Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) through REC Solutions.
The Power of Choice
How does it work?
REC Solutions allows you to offset your carbon emissions and support sustainable energy without investing in your own equipment (like solar panels).
Since customers receive “co-mingled” electricity generated by multiple sources, RECs offer a way to claim the renewable attributes of sustainable generation. This means that you can certify to customers and partners that the energy you use each month comes from renewable sources.
What does it cost?
The current rate for a monthly REC subscription is $0.00277 per kWh—just $2.77 per MWh.

Yes. However, your on-site energy production will reduce the amount of RECs you purchase.
The RECs are sourced from the renewable generators OPPD receives energy from through power purchase agreements. A complete list of renewable resources can be found in the OPPD Service Area Map.
Revenues are reinvested to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency across OPPD’s owned centers and generation facilities. These funds support projects and upgrades that lower the carbon intensity of operations while improving overall system performance and efficiency.
Participants in the REC Subscribe program will not receive a physical copy of the purchased RECs. OPPD will instead publicly retire the RECs in a REC registry on your behalf annually.

REC SPOTBUY
Customers can choose to purchase as many RECs as they want, as long as they are available and not already allocated. The cost for each REC varies frequently with fluctuations in the market for environmental attributes. The cost can also vary based upon many other variables such as when a REC was generated, the source of the renewable energy, the age of the generating facility and any certifications met by the REC.
Both large and small businesses taking electric service under a commercial rate (Rate Schedule numbers 226, 230, 230M, 231, 231M, 232, 245, 250, 261M and 357) are eligible to participate.

No. These are single transactions that do not automatically recur.

RECs are one way in which renewable energy is purchased and tracked. One REC equals one megawatt-hour (1,000 kilowatt-hours) of renewable energy. When renewable energy is produced, it includes two components; the kilowatt-hours of energy produced and the environmental attributes of the energy – the “claim” of renewable energy. RECs represent the environmental attributes of energy produced by a renewable generation facility. Learn more about RECs.
Revenues are reinvested to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency across OPPD’s owned centers and generation facilities. These funds support projects and upgrades that lower the carbon intensity of operations while improving overall system performance and efficiency.
In each transaction, OPPD will either retire or transfer RECs on behalf of the customer. If the customer desires the RECs to be retired, OPPD will perform this action. If the customer desires a transfer, then OPPD will need to obtain the REC registry account details of the customer. There may be additional registry transfer fees that the customer must pay.
Retiring a REC means the REC has been used by the owner and can no longer be sold or otherwise transferred. RECs are retired in a REC registry, an online software that creates, tracks and ultimately removes RECs from circulation. A registry is used to ensure the same REC is not claimed by multiple people by providing transparency and traceability.
Participants will receive documentation of each transaction showing the RECs retired or transferred by OPPD on their behalf.
