Omaha Public Power District’s resident peregrine falcons, Lewis and Clark, have a new baby chick. It’s a girl, and she needs a name.

Clark laid four eggs around the second week of May, and the chick she and Lewis are now caring for is the sole survivor of the clutch. In fact, she’s the first chick the pair has successfully raised since 2022.

Lewis and Clark were born at the Nebraska State Capitol in 2012. Observers named Clark believing she was male based on her weight when she was banded by wildlife experts. In 2015, they both settled into a raptor box set up high atop a stack overlooking the Missouri River at OPPD’s North Omaha Station. You can view a live webcam of the nest via this YouTube link

Since 2020, Lewis and Clark have produced and raised nine other surviving chicks: Storm, Flickr, Flash, Volta, Watt, Ohm, Ampere, Thunder, and Lightning. This year’s chick makes 10. She recently weighed in at 669 grams (almost 1.5 pounds), and observers say she’s “feisty” and “vocal.”

OPPD is seeking the public’s help in deciding on a name as special as she is. The utility narrowed down a list of potential names provided by employees. The rest is up to you – our customers. Go to OPPD.com/NametheFalcon, and vote for your favorite. Voting ends Thursday, June 12, at midnight

We will announce the winning name Friday, June 13. Stay tuned!

In the meantime, check out video of the chick’s banding process here on OPPD’s Instagram page. Please feel free to share any video or images with a courtesy to OPPD.
