Omaha Public Power District has learned of some recent misleading phone pitches from companies that claim they can bundle your utility services or reduce your electric rate.
We have received reports that several customers – mainly elderly – have been targeted by such callers. The caller says they can also help customers save energy, and they ask for an upfront fee of $100 for the service. OPPD does NOT work with any such companies.
We strongly urge customers not to share any personal or financial information during unsolicited phone calls like these. Hang up and call OPPD directly – at (402) 536-4131 in the Omaha calling area or 877-536-4131 outside of the Omaha area – to report the matter.
We advise the same if customers should receive calls from individuals claiming to work for OPPD and demanding phone payments for bills or electrical equipment, as has happened in the past. The utility never cold calls customers demanding money.
No matter their tactic, scammers can be quite convincing, sometimes even making calls appear as if they are from OPPD or another legitimate company. They are often aggressive to try and intimidate their targets. Do not fall for it. We ask our customers to remember:
- NONE of these calls are from the utility. Our call center representatives would never cold-call a customer demanding immediate payment.
- Be wary of sales pitches from companies claiming to represent or work with OPPD.
- NEVER give personal or financial information to a stranger during an unsolicited phone call.
- Exercise caution with websites. When visiting OPPD.com and our customer portal, MyOPPD.com, for such conveniences as outage reporting bill payment and setting up notification preferences, ensure you are typing the web address accurately and directly into the browser. This will help protect you from accidentally visiting nefarious websites that put your personal and financial information at risk.
