OPPD’s peregrine falcon chicks have names!
June 12, 2026
The votes are in, and Omaha Public Power District's newest peregrine falcon chicks officially have names.
After inviting the public to help name the two new female chicks born this spring at OPPD's North Omaha Station (NOS), customers responded in a big way. A thousand votes were cast, with Yin and Yang emerging as the clear favorites.
Nearly 40% of voters selected Yin and Yang, perhaps inspired by the chicks' distinctly different personalities. Thelma and Louise finished second with 13% of the vote, followed by Florence and Fontenelle with 10%.
The names couldn't be more fitting. Yang, who was banded first, brought the energy. Loud and feisty, she quickly made her presence known and embodied the bright, active force associated with her namesake. She wears band number 47/AS (black and blue).
Yin, who was banded second, is the calmer counterpart of the pair. Smaller, quieter and more reserved, she represents the softer, balanced energy that complements Yang perfectly. She wears band number 48/AS (black and blue).
The names Yin and Yang will now be officially registered with the Midwest Peregrine Society.
Lewis and Clark have produced and raised numerous chicks since they began nesting at NOS in 2015. From 2020 to 2026, the public has helped name 12 offspring — Storm, Flicker, Flash, Volta, Watt, Ohm, Ampere, Thunder, Lightning, Beak Randby, and now Yin and Yang.
