Omaha Public Power District’s resident peregrine falcons, Lewis and Clark, are celebrating a growing family with the arrival of two healthy female chicks—and now the public has a chance to help name them.

The chicks hatched this spring in a nesting box located high atop a stack at OPPD’s North Omaha Station overlooking the Missouri River. The nesting site has become a successful home for peregrine falcons and offers the public a unique opportunity to follow the birds through OPPD’s live falcon webcam via this YouTube link.

Lewis and Clark, both born at the Nebraska State Capitol in 2012, made North Omaha Station their home in 2015. Since then, they have raised numerous chicks. From 2020 to 2025, the public helped name 10 offspring — Storm, Flicker, Flash, Volta, Watt, Ohm, Ampere, Thunder, Lightning and Beak Randby.

During a recent banding event, wildlife experts determined both chicks are female, based on their size and weight, as female peregrine falcons are typically larger than males. The first chick, believed to be a few days older than her sibling, weighed 813 grams (1.79 pounds) and measured a wing chord of 186 millimeters (7.3 inches). She was especially vocal and energetic throughout the process. The second chick weighed 720 grams (1.59 pounds) with a wing chord of 164 millimeters (6.5 inches) and was noticeably calmer, though neither chick appeared particularly pleased with being handled for banding, weighing and measuring.

OPPD’s Jeremy Kellner and volunteer bander Jerry Toll safely retrieved the chicks from the nest. Toll and fellow volunteer bander Kellie Hayden completed the banding process, assisted by volunteer Kris Hammond.

Now OPPD is asking the community to help choose names worthy of its newest feathered residents. OPPD employees submitted name suggestions, and the public can vote for their favorites at OPPD.com/NameTheFalcons.

Voting is open now and closes at midnight on Thursday, June 11. The winning names will be announced on  Friday, June 12.

Members of the media and the public are encouraged to share photos and videos from OPPD’s falcon platforms with courtesy credit to Omaha Public Power District.
