What’s so smart about smart meters?

New meters are about to transform your everyday energy experience

While the basic purpose of smart meters remains the same, its wireless capability adds a whole new level of functionality for both customers and OPPD.

At-Home Features

See your actual energy use in near real-time
No more waiting for your monthly statement to see how much energy you’re using. Your meter reads and records your kWh in 15-minute intervals, giving you access to your most recent data anytime, anywhere.

Energy tracking and efficiency tools
Compare your current usage to your historical data to see when and where you can conserve. New efficiency tools can help you identify places to start improving efficiency at your home to lower your average energy costs.

Usage thresholds and alerts
Want to avoid unexpected charges? Set a specific kWh and receive text or email alerts when your electric use gets close to that limit.
*Available to smart meter customers through the new MyOPPD app (coming in September 2025)

Service Enhancements

Improved service
Smart meters provide OPPD with more detailed data about the power coming into your home. This will allow us to see potential problems with lines and equipment in your area and make repairs before services issues may occur.

Instant outage reporting
Because smart meters wirelessly communicate with OPPD at regular intervals, we’ll know the moment you lose power. You can also alert OPPD to outages and other service issues through your meter via the MyOPPD app (coming in September 2025).

Faster service restoration
Knowing which meters are unresponsive helps us determine the root cause behind service issues. Less troubleshooting means we’ll be able to jump straight to repairs.

Enhanced fire safety
Smart meters automatically alert us if overheating is detected within its socket. In the event of a house fire, the meter automatically cuts power for the safety of first responders. Find out more about smart meter fire safety.
