Omaha Public Power District is working with county officials on a potential 310-megawatt solar development located west of McCool Junction in York County, Neb. The utility has acquired rights to the potential project from EDF Renewables.

The acquisition allows OPPD to conduct a deeper study on the viability of the site. The utility will be having conversations with the community while conducting technical analysis to determine alignment with its mission of providing affordable, reliable, environmentally friendly energy services. This evaluation will include the practicality of working with other parties to build and maintain the project.

“This is an exciting venture for OPPD, our customers, and York County,” said OPPD President and CEO Javier Fernandez. “We are looking forward to collaborating with the county and local communities on an effort that will not only bring local benefits, but also help meet the growing energy needs of all Nebraskans.”

Matt McCluskey, EDF Renewables’ Vice President of Development for the region expressed appreciation towards project stakeholders.

“We have enjoyed our collaboration with the community and are confident that we have found the right partner in OPPD to sustain and build upon the meaningful work we’ve begun in York County. With a longstanding presence in Nebraska, OPPD plays a significant role in the state’s energy landscape, and we’re excited to provide them with another option to broaden their generation portfolio.”

Lisa Hurley, York County Development Corporation Executive Director, said the project stands to greatly benefit the region and state.

“We are excited that OPPD purchased the rights to keep it as a potential energy project for our region,” she said. "This development holds a lot of promise for McCool Junction and the county in general, with a positive impact at all stages, from construction to operation. We look forward to learning more about how it will take shape over time.”

OPPD will share more details on this project soon on OPPDTheWire.com and other communications outlets, including our public board meetings.
